Lately, there has been a plethora of various content on the internet, including tutorials on amateur product photography. While it’s not a bad idea to try your hand at photography skills in the product and e-commerce field, the reality is that these pictures may only be suitable for Instagram and/or other social media platforms. They lack the necessary quality for websites and large e-commerce platforms like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, your Shopify website, and others.

Firstly, consider resolution. Smartphones and small compact cameras lack the pixel resolution needed to provide decent image quality.

Next is lighting. While one can capture nice pictures by a window on a sunny day, reproducing the exact setup becomes challenging. The sun’s movement means pictures taken even 20 minutes apart will look significantly different. This inconsistency is not viable when you need a series of similar-looking pictures for online e-commerce listings.

Lastly, certain image criteria must be met. For example, some companies require a pure white background (255 for each RGB parameter), while others ask for a 15% grey even background. Achieving these criteria is impossible without professional photography equipment (camera, lenses, lighting) and in-depth knowledge of specific software.

In summary, experimenting with your photography skills can be fun and a good practice. You might create excellent images for your social media or homepage. However, if you want your business to be taken seriously and thrive, seriously consider professional photography. Here you can find tips and tricks on how you can have a go at product photography by yourself.
